Al-Quds Committee at the Popular Conference holds "Al-Quds and Trump's decisions" Seminar in Istanbul
Al-Quds Committee held a seminar on “Al-Quds and Trump's Decisions: Motives, Challenges and Ways of Confrontation” at the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad on Thursday, 28 June, in Istanbul, ahead of the Second General Assembly meeting of the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, June 29-30.
The seminar was attended by a number of Palestinian thinkers to address the Trump decision and the current crisis in the Palestinian cause. The seminar included three guests: Dr. Anis Kassem, lawyer, expert on international law and the head of the first session of the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, Dr. Rima Khalaf Al-Hnaidi, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and the Palestinian poet and professor of political science and international relations Tamim Al-Barghouthi. The talk was moderated by the Deputy Chairman of the General Assembly of the Popular Conference and the Chairman of the Al Quds Committee, Ms. Naela Al-Waari.
“This seminar does not come under a normal circumstance, as Trump announced the opening of an embassy in Al-Quds defying international legitimacy. This challenge represented a shift in the political process of the Palestinian cause and touches the whole Arab and Islamic nation”, said Rawan Al-Damen, Palestinian media figure and filmmaker.
Dr. Rima Khalaf began her speech by thanking the Turkish Republic and its President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his steadfast stand against injustice in Palestine and for the Turkish people who supported the Palestinian struggle for liberation from occupation. Khalaf pointed out that the decision of the US President to consider Al-Quds as the capital of “Israel” is dangerous because it is related to the “deal of the century”, stressing that the main objective of the deal is the establishment of a Jewish state on the land of Palestine from the river to the sea, and added: “Trump's decision was not a prelude to the deal, but an implementation of it, and the deal is in actual application and Israel, in turn, has begun implementing its policies to complete this deal”.
Dr. Khalaf noted that: “Since the resolution, Israel has pursued four policies, in the first place, the expansion of settlements, where tens of thousands of settlements began to be declared and then the gradual annexation of the West Bank from Areas A to C. The second policy is to submit a series of draft laws that pave the way to apply Israeli law on the land of the settlements, which means from a legal perspective that these settlements are part of Israeli territory”.
She added: “The third policy is the ratification of the law of nationalism, which stipulates the nationalist Israel and it removes the recognition of Arabic as an official language, and prevents the Palestinians from living in their towns, and the fourth policy is the policy of Judaization and expulsion through the adoption of the law to withdraw permanent residence of people in Al-Quds, which is an old policy but with new laws, Israel has withdrawn the residency of some 14,000 Jerusalemites from Al-Quds and certainly its main objective is to expel all of them from Jerusalem, as well as to confiscate 37% of the land of East Jerusalem”.
Dr. Khalaf confirmed that Israel's gradual steps have united the different Palestinian groups. All Palestinians are now suffering from Israeli racial discrimination. One of the most important signs of unifying the people is the recent slogan of the demonstrators in Haifa: “Haifa and Gaza are one blood and one fate”.
Dr. Khalaf concluded that the decision of Trump removed the two-state solution and returned the conflict to its origin between the racist settlement project and Palestinian right and principles, and ended the possibility of settlement, noting that the coming years will be difficult so it is our duty to all face Israeli actions, which believes that Arab weakness and the American position will give it a chance to achieve victory.
Dr. Khalaf said that there are five areas to support the struggle of the Palestinian people; the first is to support the Palestinians in their land. She said: “Israel seeks to expel the Palestinians from their land through restrictions on them and through the laws of residency withdrawal, But the failure of the deal is by supporting the Palestinian steadfastness by the Palestinians abroad and the friendly organizations of the Palestinians inside, and the most important forms of support are for civil society organizations, especially those providing educational, health and social services, and exposing Israel's crimes in the media”.
She stressed the need to defend international legitimacy against the attempts of occupation, noting that the attempts of the occupation to create a new reality on the ground, in addition to seeking to change the interpretation of international law through manipulation, such as changing the description of the West Bank from occupied to disputed, calling for intensifying the work with other countries to prevent any change in the law and the categorical rejection by the Palestinian leadership of the deal or negotiate it.
She added: “The challenges are greater than confronting them alone. Therefore, I recommend expanding the base of the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad to include hundreds of thousands of the Palestinian people, and that the conference is open to all those who believe in the right of the Palestinian people to be liberated from occupation, and that its leadership be elected by this broad base”.
Dr. Khalaf concluded: “The deal of the century will not pass as long as the Palestinians reject it. It will not be completed and will not be achieved unless the Palestinians formally renounce their right to their homeland. This is something that I do not see possible and we must work together to make it impossible. Israel may succeed in some of its small battles, but it will be defeated in its main and larger endeavor to establish a purely Jewish state in all of Palestine. It has not seen in history or even in its darkest times, one regime that defeats the will of the people”.
On his part, the Palestinian poet and diplomat Tamim Al-Barghouthi called for the individual and collective repudiation of all the agreements signed in the name of the Palestinian people without being answered or elected.
Al-Barghouthi also suggested that a Palestinian popular census should be carried out by the Palestinian people in preparation for popular Palestinian elections across borders and places. He called for liberating the PLO from the dependence on the aforementioned agreements and that its leadership under occupation and in the grip of the occupation. Al-Barghouti stressed the need to change the Palestinian national discourse from resolving the two States to ending the racist apartheid system and establishing regional and global alliances based on that, pointing to the need to protect the Palestinian cause from any regional sectarian dispute that leads to the division of the nation.
He added: “The concern, as he said it is due to reassurance and its causes are temporary, the Arab population in Palestine is more than the Israeli population, the Palestinians are younger than them, which makes them more effective in the event of confrontation, and one of the main reasons for Israel's concern that it has not won a decisive victory in any war it has fought since 1964, it has not succeeded in its campaigns in Lebanon and Gaza”.
“Now is the time to resolve the battle. Now they realize that they are stronger than any moment in their foreseeable future because their allies' survival is not certain, so they will use it to end the demographic threat. Therefore, the possibility of “Nakba” is very likely” he said.
Al-Barghuti asked: “What is the meaning of the Palestinian leadership's adherence to the two-state solution in light of its rejection by Israel, only an unjustified and unacceptable continuum” He stressed: “Every agreement signed in my name and renounce Palestine is legally void and does not oblige me nor obligate my children”. Al-Barghouthi demanded that every Palestinian individual declare his full release from these agreements individually in every way available in the newspaper or on a means of communication or in his will.
Al-Barghouthi called for the liberation of the Palestine Liberation Organization, through his previous proposals, and stressed that the Palestinian issue should be eased from any sectarian and religious conflict. Al-Barghouthi hoped that the Popular Conference takes action at home and abroad to cancel the humiliating agreements that are signed with the Zionist enemy because we are in imminent danger”.
For his part, the lawyer and expert on international law and the President of the Popular Conference in its first session, Dr. Anis Kassem explained the context in which the United States took the decision to recognize Al-Quds as the capital of “Israel”.
Kassem also demanded that a Palestinian liberation organization be created, which includes the new Palestinian generation that grew up under Oslo and refuse it day and night because it tastes bitter every day. He said: The agreements that formed Oslo could be summed up in one sentence: “The Palestinian revolution must protect the occupation”.
“We have to rehabilitate the Palestine Liberation Organization and bring the march back”, Kassem warned of what the Palestinian leadership has been saying since the Algiers conference, considering what the Palestinian leadership calls a mere misrepresentation of Palestinian public opinion.
The seminar was run in the presence of Palestinians and Arabs from across the Turkish Republic, especially Istanbul.
